- Plan a trip closer to home. Go online with your family and research local historical sites, state parks, lakes, beaches, museums, amusement parks and other nearby attractions. Chances are, you'll find something of interest to explore within a half-day's drive of home.

- Choose a self-contained destination. That's a place where you can park your car and walk, bike or use public transportation. Many cities have light rail or public transit systems that will take you everywhere you want to go for a modest fare.  And many resort destinations are all-inclusive, with restaurants, shops and activities all in one location.

- Plan your route carefully. Choose the shortest traveling distance to your destination, and avoid unnecessary detours and side trips.

- Pack light. Take only what you'll really need. That will keep down excess weight in your vehicle. Keep in mind that an extra 100 pounds of luggage or equipment in your vehicle could reduce your MPG by up to 2%.

- Drive smart. Use cruise control on highways to help you maintain a constant, fuel-efficient speed. Observe the speed limit. Remember, gas mileage decreases significantly at speeds above 60 mph. Each 5 mph that you drive over 60 is the equivalent to paying an extra $0.20 per gallon for gas. Avoid rapid acceleration and braking for further gas savings.

- Check your tires. Underinflated tires can increase fuel consumption by as much as 6%. Before your trip, make sure you service your vehicle, check all fluids and make sure your tires are safe. And tighten your gas cap (at least two clicks) to prevent gas from evaporating.

- Get aerodynamic. To reduce drag and increase fuel efficiency, remove bike racks or ski racks that are not in use. Luggage racks on top of the car can also create drag, so store luggage in the trunk whenever possible.
